Fenn started his career serving as a gunner for Thomas Anstis and worked with a missing hand. He played a key role in capturing three of four merchant ships in June of 1721. He was given command of the Morning Star as Captain. Fenn petitioned the British government for a pardon claiming they were forced into piracy. After waiting a reply for nine months from the British Government that never came Fenn resumed pirating in August 1922. His ship was taken on the beach of Tobago by surprise in April 1723. He was tried and convicted of piracy and was hung with 4 other pirates in Antigua in May 1723. Because of his rank as Captain his body remained on display as a deterrent.
