Sergeant Stephen Hempstead - American Revolutionary War Veteran Graves on Waymarking.com

Stephen Hempstead was born May 6, 1754 in New London, Connecticut. He joined the Revolutionary army at the outbreak of the war. He served under Captain Nathan and accompanied him during the intial phase of the doomed spy mission. He was amoung some of the first troops in Boston. He also was underarms in New York and heard the reading of the Declaration of Independence. He was involved in a failed attack on a British frigate in New York harbor. He was wounded during the battle of Harlem Heights and returned to New London to heal from his wounds. Due to his wounds he was not able to return to a line unit he enlisted in the Connecticut State forces and was assigned to coastal defenses. He recieved many bayonet wounds during the capture of Fort Trumbull. He escaped to Fort Griswold and was released from military service due to his wounds. He came to St Louis in 1811 and had a farm north of St Louis and was very active in the Presbyterian. In 1849 the farm was purchased and became Bellefontaine Cemetery.
