This is a memorial to a favorite son of the community of Carthage, NC. It honors the life of Mr James Rogers McConnell, a WWI aviator who gave his life in the service of the LaFayette Escadrille.

The obelisk is inscribed to honor him and reads as follows:
(side facing courthouse)He fought with ardour, for he fought unstained, he died with glory, for he died for truth, he gave unreckoning the gain or loss, his hopes, his dreams, hispromise and his youth, (side facing street) James Rogers McConnell, a citizen of Carthage joined the French Army early in 1915, after 2 years of distinguished serivce, fell in heroic battle with German aeroplanes on March 19, 1917, he fought for humanity, liberty and democracy, lighted the way for his countrymen and showed all men how to dare nobly and die gloriously.
