A large vintage billboard located in Nelson, GA. The billboard is dedicated to Jim Edmondson a local resident and a World War Two fighter pilot who flew 47 combat missions before being shot down and wounded over Germany.Mr Edmondson also received the Distinguished flying cross. Located in a small park in Nelson, GA which contains a single ballfield and not much more.
The billboard reads as follows:
(Far Left): A boy scout in his youth Mr. Edmondson served Nelson as its scoutmaster in the 1950's
(Bottom): Jim Edmondson a life long resident of Pickens and Cherokee Counties moved to Nelson in 1950 where he and his wife Betty have lived in sight of this ballfield for more than 50 years. Mr. Edmondson played baseball at the park and is depicted here from a photograph that was taken as he hit a home run playing for the American Legion Team.
(Bottom Right): With many of the people of Nelson Mr. Edmondson worked for the Georgia Marble Company on some of out nations most important buildings.
(Top Right): A decorated WWII fighter Pilot Mr. Edmondson flew 47 combat missions before being shot down and wounded and made a P.O.W. in Germany. Of his many medals the rarely awarded distinguished flying cross is shown here.
