Long range firing capability mobile field piece that was particularly effective during the Vietnam War. The 175 mm gun is in unprotected mount towards rear of hull, which has large spade at rear that is raised for traveling and used to absorb and redirect the weapon's tremendous recoil.
During testing the ground speed of the M107 was measured at 50 mph. That, paired with the open loading area, gave it the ability to fire and then rapidly move to another location, preventing the enemy from getting a lock on its position.
The M107 was the last Self Propelled “Gun” (high velocity, low trajectory, long range) in the U.S. Army inventory. Though retired from the US Army in the late 1970s, it continues to see use in many armies around the world.
