Quick Description: Urbanist now lists the Old Griffith LA Zoo among seven amazing American urban abandonment zoo. Unfortunately, fire damage blocked paths to and from the WPA renovated structures and, for now, the city insists the the Old Zoo is closed to the public.

Long Description:
The area of Griffith Park LA Zoo once called an "inadequate, ugly, poorly designed and under-financed collection of beat-up cages" has been promoted. Even though the 1930s structures were emptied and gutted in the 1960s - and nearly caught fire - they still stand today. Unfortunately, fire damage blocked paths to and from the WPA renovated structures and, for now, the city insists the the Old Zoo is closed to the public. The closed zoo is in a public city picnic area, near the Griffith park carousel.
