Construction of the Akron Municipal Airport began in 1928 on the site of Fulton Field after the Goodyear Zeppelin Co got a navy contract to build dirigibles which required hangar and port facilities. Mail service started that summer and passenger service in 1931 after the terminal was completed at a cost of $120,000.

Akron-Fulton Airport was named for longtime manager Bain Ecarius "Shorty" Fulton and his son Bain J. "Bud" Fulton. The airport’s commercial airline service ceased in 1948, when Akron-Canton Airport opened in southern Summit County. Akron-Fulton is now used for both cargo and private planes. It does have United States Customs facilities, and is therefore an international airport.

The Art Deco terminal building has a circular central bay, housing an observation deck. It is flanked by square pavilions with cupolas and adjoining rectangular side wings. The entry is accented by an arched brickwork pattern and a stepped parapet. Piers separate individual bays, which feature a large window and tile panel motif.
