Switzers was established in 1863 due to a local gold rush. Eventually it was discovered that the main seam of gold was under the town and the miners set out to use high pressure water - hydraulic mining - to remove Carnie's Hill out from underneath.

Today all that remains is church and some hydraulic pipes on display at the only point of Carnie's Hill that remains. When the railway arrived in 1901 the townsite relocated to about 2 kilometres down the hill across the river from the train station. It was renamed Waikaia although the station continued to be called Switzers.
