Per the museum website (link below), construction on the house started in fall 1841 by Nancy and Samuel Edison. Thomas Alva Edison was born here on February 11, 1847. The family moved to Port Huron, Michigan in 1854. In 1894, Edison's sister Marion Edison Page bought the house and updated it. Edison became the owner of his birthplace in 1906, During his last visit in 1923, he was shocked to find his old home still lit by lamps and candles!
After the death of Thomas A. Edison, his birthplace was opened to the public as a memorial and museum in 1947. The site is maintained by the non-profit Edison Birthplace Association. Hours of operation vary during the year, thus check the association website. Tours cost $7 adults, $6 seniors, and $4 children.

Personal Experience: Early morning visit to Milan before the town woke up during the summer. Enjoyed with the outside of the well maintained house and museum.
