"New Red" was constructed in 1885-1886 and is a stand pipe water tower designed to regulate water pressure rather than to store water. The tower was designed by William Eames, of Eames and Young, the firm that designed several buildings in the St Louis area. The tower standing 196 feet tall is constructed of brick with terra cotta inlays, carved stone ornaments and projecting gargoyles. The top is a slate and copper roof. There was a spiral stair case that went to the observation platform but it has been removed. The water tower went out of service in 1912 when stable electic pumps replaced the erratic steam-driven pumping system.
