October 7, 2006: After a night out with friends in Burlington, 21-year-old University of Vermont student Michelle Gardner-Quinn went missing. A little over a week later later, her body was found by hikers at Huntington Gorge in nearby Richmond. An autopsy revealed she had been sexually assaulted, beaten and strangled.
May 22, 2008: Brian Rooney, a 36-year old construction worker, was convicted to life in prison for Michelle's murder.
Michelle
We love you
At some point, family and friends placed this small oval plaque on a roadside boulder at Huntington Gorge. It has become a collection site for various tokens (beads, flowers, etc.) left in Michelle's memory by visitors.
The Gorge is a beautiful but deadly place. Near this memorial (as pictured) is a Vermont Historical marker listing some of the people who who have drowned here, trapped by the strong currents.
