In Boston, near the intersection of Huntington Avenue and Belvidere Street, is the fountain at the Christian Science Center, which is a large brick plaza with a rectangular body of water called the Reflecting Pool, lines of Linden trees, and flower boxes that tie together the various buildings that make up the headquarters and main church of Christian Science.
The fountain is a series of spouts arranged to make an 80-ft diameter ring. The 180 spouts of water cross over and under each other, forming an arch that, if you are careful, can crawl through and only get misted. The fountain is generally working when the weather is above freezing - mainly from about May 1st to November 1st, though at the time of the visit, November 13, 2009, it was still operating.
The fountain was designed by Araldo A. Cosutta, then part of I. M. Pei and Associates, as part of the expansion of the center in the 1970s.
In the summer, this area has a lot of activity. Children from the neighborhoods around come to play in the fountain. So much activity happens that around 2005, the fountain area was renovated so that it was made safer for people.
If you are in that part of Boston on a hot day, take a side trip and run through the fountain!
