From the inventory: "
A globe of the world covered with mosaic and suspended in a circular slate fountain. The globe is covered with marble and stone in blue, green, gray and white, which combine to form rough outlines of continents and oceans. The gold leaf and glass form various figures on the globe, including three boys running, a hunter and a wolf, a man and a woman.

The sculpture was the first commissioned artwork for the Civic Center. It cost $100,000. Paid for by private donations to the Dublin Fine Arts Foundation. Nearby plaque reads: Dublin Fine Arts Foundation is pleased to present to the City of Dublin/GAIA by Ned Smyth/"The Earth is a living organism that is an interraleted (sic) and interbalanced whole."/8 Foot Diameter Globe covered with tiles of Venetian glass, colored stones, and gold leaf./Dedicated: January 22, 1991.
