According to a Bessemer Historian, this armored payroll car used by the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company which was later absorbed into US Steel. (source) The mountains in this area were mined heavily for iron ore from the 1860's to the 1930's for the nearby Oxmoor Iron Furnaces. US Steel still owns a substantial amount of nearby land.
