The M4 Sherman was the main battle tank for the U.S. Army in World War II. There were more than 50,000 of these tanks produced beginning in 1941. This model of tank continued in service until 1955 when the model was retired and replaced by M48 Patton tanks. The main armament for the M4 is a 75 mm cannon with a secondary .50 cal machine gun.
