Fort Derussy Armed Forces Recreation Center is located on the west end of Waikiki Beach and it is the home of the U.S. military's Hale Koa Hotel and the Hawaii Army Museum.
When this fort was first built in 1904, it was known as the Kalia Military Reservation. In 1909 it was renamed Fort DeRussy. Several batteries were built on the grounds of Fort DeRussy, and Battery Randolph is now the home of the United States Army Museum of Hawaii. Originally there were two large canons in Fort Derussy and later they were replaced with anti-aircraft guns. In 1949, the fort was closed, and the property became the Fort DeRussy Armed Forces Recreation Center, or Fort DeRussy Park, as it is more commonly known.
Within the park there is a large grassy park with picnic tables and barbeques, the U.S. military's Hale Koa Hotel, and the United States Army Museum of Hawaii. On the beach you'll find gorgeous views in all directions; Diamondhead one way, and Duke's Lagoon the other. Famous as the widest stretch of white sand beach at Waikiki, this popular park is open to the public. It offers volleyball, squash and tennis courts, food stands, shaded picnic tables, barbecues, dressing rooms and showers.
