Fire Station #1, originally known as central fire station, replaced Akron’s original central fire station on High St., which was demolished around 1924 for the construction of the Municipal Building(see Waymark WM7P3P). The upper floors of this building contained offices for the fire department. This fire station was closed in January 1995 and not replaced. It was bought and restored by the Akron Bar Association and Akron Bar Foundation around 2007.
Note the bell tower, that appears to be a reproduction. The white bands next to the bell, the white circles above the bands and, what appears to be the bottom of a flag pole, in the old photo are all missing in the recent photo. Also, the doors and balcony under the bell tower in the old photo have been replaced by a window. The three ovals above the second story windows say A F D (Akron Fire Department). The left oval, containing the “A” had been replaced by an air conditioning unit. Upon restoration the “A” was replaced, but on a flat panel, while the original “F” and “D” have a slight outward curve.
Year photo was taken: 1920
