Union Gen. George B. McClellan's peninsula campaign, an effort to strike Richmond, ended six miles short of the Confederate capital at Seven Pines. Confederate defenses pushed the Union line back to the east. Even though Union reinforcements arrived on June 1, McClellan did not order a counterstrike and both sides withdrew. This battle was the largest of the eastern theater up to that point, but the outcome was inconclusive and both sides claimed victory. Most significantly for the Confederacy, Gen. Robert E. Lee was appointed commander of the Army of Northern Virginia after Gen. Joseph E. Johnston was injured.

This battlefield marker is located on Williamsburg Road about 500 ft east of the Sandston post office. The inscription on the marker reads as follows:

"In their eastward attack of May 31, 1862 on Federal troops holding Seven Pines, Rodes' brigade to the south of this highway and Garland's brigade to the north, supported respectively by Rains and G. B. Anderson, came under heavy fire approximately at this point."
