Quick Description: Historic former Baptist Church in Centerville, Iowa.

Long Description:
The Second Baptist church congregation was founded in 1893 with 12 members to serve the African-American population in the growing coal mining community of Centerville, Iowa. The congregation grew and by 1902 there was a desire to have a building of their own and fund raising efforts began. In June, 1902 the cornerstone was laid for the wood frame Gothic Revival styled church. Coal mining declined in the area beginning in the 1920 and the congregation peaked at 125 members in the 1930s. The congregation continued to continued to use the building through the years until the early 1990s when building sat vacant. Beginning in 1996 preservation efforts began to save the church. In 2000 and again 2002 grants were obtained to restore the church building. The restoration was completed in 2003 and it is now used for musical and other events. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
