McPherson's Army at Snake creek gap
A narrow 3 mi passage between 2 ridges. begining 1 mi s of this marker & ending at the fork of sugar valley & resaca rd's
May 8th 1864. While Geary's Div. (20th A.C. Union) stormed rocky face ridge at Dug Gap. 5 mi N.E. McPherson's Army of the Tenn. (15th and 16th A.C. Union) gained a lodgment in Snake creek gap & held it while the 14th. 20th & 23d corps (union) left the dalton front & marched through the gap.
Outflanked in his position at Dalton. Johnston (confederate) evacuated it. May 12. & withdrew to Resaca. which he defended aginst Sherman's forces in 2 days of battle may 14th & 15th.
