Alcatraz Island was once a military and federal prison. Now it's part of the National Park Service which offers tours, both audio and in person, of the prison.

The audio tour offers listeners the history of the prison straight from the men who ran it: famous prisoners (Al Capone and "Birdman") and some of the wardens. The audio tour is offered every day and there are park rangers to give guided tours at night. In order to get to the island a boat must be taken which departs on one of the Piers in the San Francisco Bay.

first boat departs at 9:00 a.m. departing every half hour, but varies throughout the seasons. View the site to see boat departure times for the respective season.
