"In commemoration of more than 65,000 Austrian Jews
who were killed by the Nazis between 1938 and 1945."

– Inscription below the doors.

Mahnmal für die 65.000 ermordeten österreichischen Juden und Jüdinnen der Shoah

Judenplatz was the site of the Jewish ghetto in medieval times. In 1996 British artist Rachel Whiteread was the winner of a competition to design a monument for the Jewish victims of the Nazi regime, to be unveiled in the square on 9 November 1999, the anniversary of Kristallnacht. A heated public debate ensued and following many changes, including the repositionig of the proposed monument by one metre, Judenplatz was reopened on 25 October 2000 as a place of remembrance. It now contains Whiteread's memorial, the new Museum Judenplatz at No. 8, and the excavated remains of the medieval synagogue that lie beneath the square. The museum also houses a public database of the 65.000 Austrian Jews killed by the Nazis and, in the basement, the excavated synagogue.
