The Country Tavern Restaurant & Pub on Amherst Street, Nashua NH, has a rather haunting past. Back in 1741, the property and farmhouse were owned by a Captain Ford and Mrs. Elizabeth Ford.
The story goes that one day, after returning home from a several-month-long voyage at sea, Capt. Ford returned home to find Elizabeth pregnant. Now of course this would anger any man, but Capt. Ford seemed astonishingly mad. Supposedly he waited untill the birth of the illegitimate child then killed both Elizabeth and the newborn. There are a few theories on what Capt. Ford did with the bodies. One says that he buried them somewhere on the grounds, many believe right under where the restaurant stands today. Another suggests he plunged them into a well. A third suggests that he did away with the bodies in different locations.
Regardless of what happened, today the ghost of Elizabeth is believed to still wander her former home and property looking for her child. Both patrons and employees report seeing her in the mirror behind the bar or looking out the front window. Accounts of women's hair being played with in the ladies room are familiar to the staff. Most common are accounts of things being moved either around on tables or being sent crashing to the ground. Any of Elizabeth’s antics have never been reported as malicious. They are seen as just ways of getting attention, her way of asking if anyone has seen her child.
