Stone and concrete amphitheater over looking the natural cave entrance where Rangers conduct bat flight programs each night from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October. Each evening, nearly 400,000 Brazilian (aka Mexican) free-tail bats exit Carlsbad Cavern in search of insects for dinner. Seated here you are looking directly down into the natural opening and is a great place to watch, what the original discoverer of the caverns called a dark column of smoke arising from a hole in the ground.
