William Ordway Partridge's statue of a seated William Shakespeare (1894) provides a lap for children to climb onto. Moved to Lincoln Park after being on display at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

ARTIST: Partridge, William Ordway, 1861-1930, sculptor.
DATE: 1893. Dedicated April 23, 1894.
MEDIUM: Sculpture: bronze; Base: granite.
"Inscription: Wm Ordway Partridge / E. Gruet Jne Fondeur/Paris (East side of base:) What a piece of work is man How noble/in reason How infinite in faculty/The Bequest of Samuel Johnston (West side of base:) He was not (of) an age but for all time/ Myriad-minded Shakespeare MDLXIV-MDCXV(I) signed Founder's mark appears.
Description: Seated portrait of Shakespear(e) wearing the costume from the period of King James I of England. His left hand rests on his left thigh and his right hand is resting on the back of the chair. He appears to have just set aside the book he has been reading.
Funds for this sculpture were provided in the will of Chicago financier Samuel Johnston who died in 1886."
Note - There is also a plaque embedded in the ground in front that reads:
