At the beginning of 18th century Friedrich Karl Count Schönborn, prince-bishop of Bramberg and Würzburg, bought a summer-house in the Laudongasse and commissioned the architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to rebuilt it to a garden palace. Hildebrandt's work was done between 1706 and 1714. The garten palace differs from other palaces in Vienna in the smaller size and consequently lower height. In 1725 the adjoining properties were bought and the garden as well as the palace were enlarged. -- The classical pediment was added after 1750 by the court architect Isidor Carnevale, who resided in the palace.
In 1862 the palace and the remaining garden were sold to the city of Vienna. The garden was opened to the public and the palace was renovated. Between 1872 and 1897 the newly founded University of agriculture was there, between 1897 and 1917 the Supreme district court. In 1920 the palace became home to the Austrian Museum for Ethnic Studies.
The building is in rather bad condition today. There is an open argument between the Museum and the city who is responsible for the maintenance and renovation.
