Captain Smith was a veteran of the Civil War and he was an expert tombstone carver.

On the cliff face above the cabin Captain Smith carved the name of his blacksmith friend Roy Bowen in the cliff face. Captain Smith also carved the insignia (horseshoe and star)of the blacksmith shop in the cliff face.
