From the wooden plaque in front of the school:

Built in 1883 on land donated by B.R. Bonnell
to serve families southwest of Loveland. Named
for a single hackberry tree growing nearby.
The school closed in 1920 and was used for a
community center until 1940, then for grain storage
until abandoned.

From the Loveland City Website:

Lone Tree School, a historic one-room school located at North Lake Park in Loveland, is the setting for four one-week summer sessions. Any child who will enter second through ninth grade in the fall of 2009 is eligible to participate in the educational program which simulates the typical school day and activities of the late 19th century.

The history and folkways of the High Plains of Northern Colorado will be integrated into a lively school curriculum that features the “three R’s.” In addition, children will enjoy old time games and crafts. Each session is limited to 25 students. Advance registration form and payment are required to register for the class. No phone registrations will be accepted. Each child may sign up for one session only.
