[ENG] There are two hypotheses on its origin:
The name of the municipality comes from the word “Punctum”, from Latin crossroads or meeting point because this village was a crossing site of the old Roman roads. By such reason, the coat of arms of the town represents the world and in centre one point; meaning with this allegory that the place is the centre of Spain, taking the name of “Point” to the town, by linguistic corruption, is called Pinto today.
The second hypothesis on the origin of Pinto under Islam dominion. It is a beautiful legend that the invaders of half moon left us: “The Legend of the Ark” and the denomination of “Iberian Peninsula Geographic Centre”, with permission of neighbouring municipality of Getafe. According to the old Arabic legend, the Muslims did measurements that located in Ejido square, just in the Xata corner, the centric point of the peninsula. In the mentioned place, always according to the legend, the invaders buried the Ark, under a marked circular stone with an X. Inside they deposited the instruments used in their measurements.
Nowadays an austere commemorative monument is elevated in this location.
[ESP] El nombre del municipio procede de la palabra "punctum", del latín "punto de paso" o "cruce de caminos", debido a que esta población era un lugar de paso y encuentro de las viejas calzadas romanas. Por tal motivo, el blasón de la villa representa el mundo y, en el centro, un punto; queriendo significar con esta alegoría que aquel lugar es el centro de España, dándose el nombre de "punto" a la población más inmediata que, por corrupción lingüística, se llama hoy Pinto.
Hay una segunda hipótesis sobre el origen del municipio que lo sitúa bajo el poder del Islam, y que tiene relación con una hermosa leyenda que nos dejaron los invasores de la media luna: "La Leyenda del Arca" y la denominación de "Centro geográfico de la península Ibérica", con permiso del vecino Getafe. Según la vieja leyenda árabe, que la tradición ha traído hasta nuestros días, los musulmanes llevaron a cabo unas mediciones que situaron en Pinto, en la plaza del Ejido, justo en la esquina Xata, el punto céntrico de la península. En el citado lugar, siempre según la leyenda, enterraron los invasores, bajo una piedra circular marcada con una X, el arca, en cuyo interior depositaron los instrumentos que habían utilizado en sus mediciones.
Hoy en día se erige en dicho emplazamiento un austero monumento conmemorativo.
