This marker and a North Carolina historical marker describe the battle of Jackson and how Confederate forces, some caught with their paints down while bathing in the millpond, turned back a Union attempt to destroy the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad bridge over the Roanoke River at Weldon. The battle at Boone's Mill saved the bridge and allowed supplies to continue to Richmond
