By the time this bridge was completed in 1913 there had been a chair suspended on a wire over the Clutha River at about this point since 1897. However, it was deemed unsafe that when the local officials came out to convince residents it was safe that "the councillors and the county engineer inspected the wire as a result of the complaints, none of them had the courage to use it!"
