This East Lake Victorian home, built i 1897, was the home of Harry Bertram Hewes until his death in 1953. Hewes, descendant of one of thesigners of the Declaration of Independence, was a founder and co~owner of Jeanerette Lumber and Shingle Co., which harvested Cypress lumber from the Atchafalaya Basin between 1894 and 1925, and milled it on the site of City Park on Bayou Teche just northeast of the Home. Jeanerette Lumber & Shingle Co. remains one of the largest landowners of property in the Basin.
