Kurier appeared for first time at 27th August 1945 in Vienna. It was founded by the American occupying power as counterweight to the Soviet propaganda in Austria. The first chief editor was Colonel Albert W. Reid.
Christoph Kotanko has been the chief editor since 2005. The current circulation is about 260.000, the newspaper has about 620.000 readers. Kurier is the third most readed newspaper in Austria (behind Kronen Zeitung and Kleine Zeitung).
