Tief im Schatten alter Rüstern,
Starren Kreuze hier am düstern
Uferrand.
Aber keine Epitaphe,
Sage uns wer unten schlafe,
Kühl im Sand.
Still ist's in den weiten Auen,
Selbst die Donau ihre blauen,
Wogen hemmt.
Denn sie schlafen hier gemeinsam,
Die, die Fluten still und einsam,
Angeschwemmt.
Alle die sich hier gesellen,
Trieb Verzweiflung in der Wellen
Kalten Schoß.
Drum die Kreuze die da ragen,
Wie das Kreuz das sie getragen,
"Namenlos".
Graf Wickenburg
The cemetery consists in fact of two cemeteries: the less known old one (N 48° 09.591', E 016° 30.196'), in use from 1840 to 1900, with only one crucifix for the 478 unknown dead burried here, and the newer one (N 48° 09.583', E 016° 30.166'), in use from 1900 to 1940 with about 100 graves (some of them even with name plates).
Reachable by car (e.g. highway A4, exit 4/Simmeringer Haide) or by bus 76A (station "Alberner Hafen").
