Long Description:
Text on marker reads:
THREE RIVERS PETROGLYPHS
Three miles to the east is a mile-long array of pictures packed
into the solid rock walls of a volcanic ridge. They include both
geometric and animal forms. They were likely made by prehistoric
Mogollon Indians between ca. A.D. 1000 and 1400.
This marker on US Hwy 54 is quite near where you turn onto
County Rd B30 to visit one of the most interesting petroglyph sites
anywhere. Along a basaltic ridge rising above the Three Rivers
valley the Jornada Mogollon people scratched and pecked masks,
sunbursts, wildlife, hand prints and geometric designs, creating
over 21,000 petroglyphs in all. Read the link below for more
information on this fascinating bit our collective past.
