Long Description:
Quebec City, in the province of Quebec, is the only walled city in
North America. The city was founded in 1608 and is one of the
oldest settlements in North America. In the 1700's Quebec went back
and forth from French to British rule several times, until France
finally ceded all of "New France" over to Britain. Before the War
of 1812, the walls were strengthened and the "Citadelle" was built.
There was also a series of artillery towers built. The Citadelle
and some of the towers are still in use today. The picturesque area
of "old" Quebec is a popular spot for visitors who enjoy the old
buildings and small winding streets.
