Originally erected on the Courthouse grounds in 1898 the meridians, a north and a south, were relocated to the cemetery during a period of courthouse expansion and renovation in the 1920's. Since the relocation the north meridian has been lost or destroyed but the south meridian remains and is a 6 x 6 x 48 inch granite monument, projecting 4 inches above the ground inscribed with 'NCGS + USCS 1898'.
Back in the day the meridian monuments were used to provide a true north/south line as a calibration standard by which surveyors could observe the magnetic declination and adjust their surveys accordingly.
The meridian is located in Forest Hill Cemetery approximately one half mile east of the Nash County Courthouse, 700 ft NE of the cemetery entrance on E Cedar St, 150 ft ESE of a brick building, 40 ft W of a cedar tree with the top broken out, 35 ft N of the centerline of a dirt driveway and 18 inches NE of the coping around a lot.
