Quick Description: During the 1957 Montana State Prison Riot the Assistant Warden was murdered in his office.
Location: Montana, United States
Date Posted: 11/15/2009 7:52:35 AM
Waymark Code: WM7NTH
The riot began on April 16, 1959 when a notorious prisoner, Jerry Myles, and two other convicts managed to seize rifles from several guards. Immediately thereafter, Myles and another prisoner, Lee Smart charged the deputy warden's office in the administration building.
During the ensuing struggle, a Sgt. Cox was stabbed in the arm and shoulder (from which he would later recover) and Deputy Warden Ted Rothe was shot and killed by Smart. During the 36-hour riot, Deputy Warden Ted Rothe was shot and killed. In addition, 26 prison employees and inmates were taken hostage.
The riot ended when members of the Montana National Guard fired shots from an anti-tank bazooka into the cellblock tower where Miles, Smart and the other ringleaders were barricaded, after which Guardsmen stormed the prison and regained control. The only other deaths during the riot were Myles and Smart, who died in the tower, apparently carrying out a murder-suicide pact.
