Grants Lava flow is located within El Malpais National Conservation Area and El Malpais National Monument, though most peoples contact with it is limited to what they see from their vehicle windows as they travel I-40 in the Grants area. The area is marked by seeming endless lava fields, huge pressure ridges, collapsed ponds and sinks, and numerous lava tubes. What they see is the result of the youngest volcanic eruption in New Mexico, dated somewhere between 5,000 and 2,600 years old.
With the Grants Lava Flow Landmark measuring some 32 miles long and being about 18 miles wide at its widest point, there is much to see and experience. The co-ordinates for this waymark are for the El Calderon area where the visitor can experience many of the different aspects of the lava flows.
