Long Description:
Because it is open to visitors, the tours are self guided, you
can get a look behind the scenes and see the sharp contrast between
the exterior beauty of the buildings and the grim reality of prison
life.
While Montana Territory's established a penitentiary in Deer
Lodge in 1871, the oldest buildings remaining date from the 1890s
and the impressive three-story red brick cell block was constructed
in 1912. So it is definitely not one of the utilitarian structures
of a modern prison.
All of the structures within the prison were built by forced
convict labor, something that has since been outlawed. Inside the
buildings are various displays, showcasing everything from prisoner
artwork to concrete soled shoes, and from daily log sheets to a
portable gallows, the entire story of prison is told.
One of the 200, 6 foot by 7 foot cells in the main cell
block.
