There is an Art-O-Mat machine in the eclectic OOP! store, formerly of Providence, RI, then the Legacy Mall in Dedham, MA, and now probably in San Antonio, TX.

The Latest (and probably final) Information (02/16/2012):

I did a search on the Art-O-Mat site and saw a image of the machine, or one very similarly decorated, now listed as being at The Point Park and Eats in San Antonio, Texas. It looks like a nice home for the Art-O-Man, and I hope it stays there for years to come. I have changed the title to reflect that the machine is gone in Dedham and Providence.

Latest Information (05/27/2011):

The good news -

In Dedham, at the Legacy Mall, at store #202, is the relocated OOP! store with the OOP! Art-O-Mat, formerly reported to be located in Providence, RI. OOP! is an eclectic art and gift shop that offers not your usual items, including works from local artists. The Art-O-Mat is located about 2/3 of the toward the rear of the store, along the right wall (when facing the back of the store). The machine looks as it did in Providence (see description from the original posting, below). New items with different artists are displayed - changed in the description, with the earlier line-up in the archive section.

The bad news -

I had learned of the new location of the Art-O-Mat only to have learned that the store was closing that weekend (Memorial Day - I guess the signs saying 50% off throughout the entire store should have been a hint). The store will not reopen. Thus, the future of this Art-O-Mat is uncertain. Hopefully, either the OOP! blog will continue or the Art-O-Mat web site will continue to update its whereabouts (as it had in helping me locate its latest position). Stay tuned!

Original Posting (11/2009):

In downtown Providence, RI, at the intersection of Eddy and Westminster Streets, is the OOP! store that sells all sorts of interesting items. In the store, there is an Art-O-Mat where you can buy cigarette box sized art for $5.00, like other Art-O-Mats.

This machine has an alien theme to it, from the "Moody Teapot from Outer Space" to the "Angry Space Alien with Frosted Scones for Feet." The front area behind the glass is mostly blue with either alien beings or blocks of wood with space ship designs on them. Below them is the selection area with many artists to choose from. The border is painted a neon green. On the side you can see are more designs.

To get to OOP! watch for the one-way signs throughout the area. Many of these roads are barely one car wide with cars parked on one side. The best way would be to go from the Providence City Hall on Dorrance Street one block southeast to Eddy Street and go one block southeast to Westminster Street. The store is at 220 Westminster Street. You are on your own for parking.

The store has been here since July 2007. The store was previously moved from the store in the Providence Place Mall about a mile away. There was another store near Tower Hill by the Brown University Campus. A waymark for an Art-O-Mat was there but was archived. The present Art-O-Mat is different in appearance from the previous machine, but it may have been the same one redecorated, or a new one. But, the machine location is at least 3 miles from the last position and, thus, qualifies as a new waymark.

I talked with the sales person, so she was aware of what I was doing (kind of hard to hide it when the camera flash goes off).

Artists: Jennifer Menken, Kelli Busch, Nina Michelle, Dino Adkins, Sandy Wilcox, Cathy Beal

Note (8/3/2010)

I have been informed via a visit - and photos to show it - that OOP! has closed that store. The Art-O-Mat has been, for the moment, left by itself in the store. This will have to be watched closely to see what happens to this machine! Thanks to Roscoe45!
