Across the street from the Post Hotel on the west side of Valloire is a large Zarbula sundial. This is facing a large private yard on the back of the house called “le Peuplier” The dial, an hour circle in a rectangular frame, faces south declining west. It was restored in 2000 by Evelyne and Norbert Peyrot. The Latin motto reads “Vita Fugit Sicut Umbra”. (Life passes just like the shadow). It is one of the common styles used by Zarbula but is not dated or signed.
We generally respect private property but the owners were out in the yard so we went in to say " Bonjour" and talk to them about the Zarbula sundial. They were quite proud of the dial, showing us how it was featured in the book “Cadrans Solaires, Pays des Savoie”. They told us of a couple of other interesting sundials in the area.
Valloire is a mountain town, originally the local market town for this alpine area. Now resort residential housing dominates providing cabins in the mountains in the summer and ski chalets in the winter. Winter access is from the north as Col du Galibier is closed. Rural life, agriculture and sheep herding carries on. We saw the transhumance as the sheep were brought down from the alpine meadows and over the Col du Galibier but by modern truck transportation. Vita Fugit Sicut Umbra.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
