Mitch Park
John Lewis Mitch (1850-1926) was active in the development of the Edmond community upon his arrival in 1889. He held several public offices including Mayor from 1890-1891,City Councilman from 1897-1898, as well as a representative to the State Constitutional Convention. He also served on the school board and contributed to the location and development of the Territorial Normal School, now known as UCO.
In 1893, the City Council set aside a block of land for a park at Campbell and Broadway at the urging of J.L. Mitch. North Park, as originally named, served as Edmond's first park. J.L. Mitch planted more than 100 trees in the neighborhood of this first park. In 1905, the City Council renamed the park in his honor. As Edmond continued to grow, the park land served as the site of Edmond's high school, an athletic field and in 1980 as the site of the downtown post office.
In 1992, Edmond voters approved purchasing 280 acres adjacent to Santa Fe and Covell, where a community park was constructed. Dedicated in 1994, the park was named J.L. Mitch Park to honor his vision of Edmond. In 1997 a memorial located at the park was dedicated to the Edmond victims of the Oklahoma City Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building disaster.
