Water slowly eroding away the region's Blackhand Sandstone created Rock House - the only true cave in Hocking Hills State Park.
Rock House is approximately 25 feet high, 200 feet long, and varies between 20 to 30 feet wide. Several openings along the tunnel formation act like windows to a house, thus providing the name to the formation.
Not only does Rock House look like a house, its shelter has acted like a house for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence has shown that Native Americans inhabited the cave. Small ovens constructed in the rock walls were to cook meals and troughs carved in the cave's floor providing inhabitants with a water supply by collecting water.
