Long Description:
The Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof was built in so called
Ringstrassenstil 1872 by the architects Ullmann and
Barvicius. The station was renamed to Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof
after 1918. It was heavily damaged 1945 at the dawn of the WWII and
quick, but rather carelessly rebuilt after the war. At the
beginning of the 1970s it was in so bad condition that it was
decided to take the station down. The new station, built 1978, is
covered up by beton plates and carries several office buildings and
the Vienna University of Economics.
The importance of the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof went down in the last
years, especially after a new railway and subway interjunktion was
opened one station away. Most of the trains which arrive here are
mostly regional lines for the area north of Vienna.
