The Newbern Presbyterian Church was organized in 1844 by North Carolinians who settled area in 1830's. The current church building constructed in 1848 typifies rural church architecture of "Old South." The church is near-original form with hand-hewn lumber jointed with wooden pegs. Early membership in the church included slaves who sat on benches flanking the pulpit. The church always with out a resident minister but has monthly service and an active church live.

The fenced cemetery is located directly behind the church and appears to have served as the community's cemetery. The cemetery has several hundred graves some dating back to the 1850's or before. There is also a Confederate memorial in the cemetery. The cemetery is well maintained.
