The Newbern Presbyterian Church was organized in 1844 by North Carolinians who settled area in 1830's. The current church building constructed in 1848 typifies rural church architecture of "Old South." The church is near-original form with hand-hewn lumber jointed with wooden pegs. Early membership in the church included slaves who sat on benches flanking the pulpit. The church always with out a resident minister but has monthly service and an active church life.
