Long Description:
Copied from the sign:
"The original church of Sts Peter & Paul's was a brick church
built on this site. The nave of the new Cathedral was built in
1871. The building of the transept, sanctuary, sacristy and tower
began in 1887. The completed Cathedral of Sts Peter & Paul's
was blessed by Cardinal Moran on 29 June 1890. The Cathedral was
erected outside the old church, which was used as a sanctuary until
the new Cathedarl was completed. The old church was demolished and
its material removed throught the Bourke Street doors. Andrea
Stombucco designed the first stage of the Cathedarl and Charles
Spadazzini completed the second. It is cruciform and of traditional
gothic design, made principally from local green porphry stone with
dressing sof Marulan sandstone. Notable furnishings include the
famous Hills Organ and the John Hardman stained glass window over
the sanctuary, both installed in 1890. The church served as the
Cathedral church of the Diocese of Goulburn until 1969, when St.
Christopher's in Canberra became the Cathedral. To the east of the
Cathedral in Verner Street is the original Bishop's House which is
now the Presbytery, across the road is St Patrick's Hall, and
adjoining the Cathedral on the Bourke Street frontage is the former
St Brigids Primary School. In the grounds of this school is the
toilet block tht caused the nationally reported incidident known as
the Goulburn School Strike in July 1962. The school authority was
requested to update the toilets and it seemed the school would have
to be closed. After a public meeting is was announced that all
Catholic schools in Goulburn would close the next day and 2000
students would enrol in the State System. This was a turning point
in Australian school history, with the state and federal
governments introducing limited funding for Catholic schools. There
are Bicentenary plaques on the gate of the Church and Presbytery in
Verner Street.
