"Belmore Park
Belmore Park was orginally the market square from as early as 1843. In the early days it was the site where many types of merchandise were exchanged including pigs, sheep, stock & garden produce. It was the location of various sporting events including foot races, wheelbarrow races and games such as eating apples on a string or catching the "greasy pig". On the left is Market Street, previously the course for the wheelbarrow race. Historically, the most important of the huge exotic trees is the English Oak (Quericus Robun) planted by Lady Belmore to commemorate the opening of the railway on 27 May, 1869. The Council fenced in the whole of the Square with a white picket fence in 1871. Belmore Square became popular as a venue for minor athletic sports and Sunday picnics. Over the years many civic monuments were erected. The Temperance Fountain with the carved lions heads was donated by the Temerance Societies of Goulburn in 1886. The fence & gate with sandstone pillars were erected in 1902 to mark the coronoation of King Edward VII. The Band Rotunda with the locally produced fine cast-iron was built in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria's jubilee. The Hollis Memorial Fountain was built by public subscription in 1899 in memory of Dr. L.J. Hollis. Belmore Square was re-dedicated as Belmore Botanic Gardens on September 13, 1899. The Boer War Memorial, adorned by a carved marble soldier, was erected in 1904. The large granite column memorial behind the band rotunda was erected in 1910 in memory of Mayor J. Knowlman. Wallabees, kangaroos, emus & peacocks roamed the large aviary until it was finally removed around 1926. The Centenary of Local Government in June 1959 was commemorated by three memorials, the most prominent was the Glass House. In time there have been many more monuments erected. Take a wander to discover & enjoy the pictureque beauty of this historic Park."
