New York, New York is a 1977 Martin Scorsese film starring Robert de Niro and Liza Minnelli.
The theme was originally recorded by Minnelli, but Frank Sinatra's version (in the wake of his 1978 concerts at Radio City Music Hall) irrevocably made it his song. In that form it has achieved cultural icon status as a celebration of New York City.
The New York Yankees and the New York Rangers play it after every game, regardless who won, and it sometimes is heard at New York Knicks games. It is played at every NYPD police academy graduation and after "the ball drops" on New Year's eve. Jeff Bridges does a passable imitation of Sinatra singing it in "Starman."
My default picture of Times Square is intended to represent the verse in which the singer expresses a desire to "wake up in a city that never sleeps."
